OK, so it’s not exactly Australia, but the Main River has a bit of diarrhea (said in a whispered voice) right now and is busting its guts. Its shit-brown water is running fast – all over the place! All that beautiful snow from December has turned into this.

Hochzeit (Wedding) Party
Last night we attended a hillbilly wedding party in a fishing shack in Bavaria. It was like venturing into the deep woods of the Arkansas Ozarks, only the people wore lederhosen and dirndls. There was no cell phone reception in these parts! I even saw the German version of Huckleberry Finn, a boy in a [...]
Heimat
We recently spent several days helping some German friends move into a house they bought. The experience was fascinating and brought to light some interesting cultural differences. While I speak in generalities, I am aware that an individual’s experience from either culture can be quite different. In the U.S., we are good at moving. Our [...]
The Magic Suitcase
*Warning, warning, cover your ears if you don’t like needless and selfish whining* I arrived home yesterday from a fabulous girl’s weekend in Rome (more to come!). While I enjoyed every breathing moment of it, I think I’ve about had my quota of living out of my suitcase for the time being. This weekend there [...]
Tell me about…windows*
I am admittedly fussy about the temperature. I neither like it too hot or too cold; thus, spring and fall are my favorite seasons. Germany generally has very comfortable temperatures for me. Hey. Germany.
We need to have a talk. I thought we were so over this. I mean, come on. 50 degrees (F) today? And basically two relentless weeks of chilly temperatures and scowling, grey skies? Just so you know, I’m wearing sweaters and coats. Back home I’d be sweating and wearing skirts and sandals by now. I’m [...]
Cool Köln
As we left Aachen and were zipping along the Autobahn at light speed, we decided to take an impromptu stop in Köln (Cologne) to see its impressive and famous cathedral, the Kölner Dom. So we zipped in, saw it, and zipped out. And impressive it is, to say the least. I craned my head back, [...]
What I See
Some funny things from the past few weeks…. At the Frankfurt flea market, you can get stuffed Chickens, complete with ruffled feathers. Extra bonus is that they come attractively mounted on a board for your displaying pleasure. Bird cage, used. Includes partially-eaten bird feed, litter with crusty droppings, and unidentified regurgitated material. Bird missing. I [...]
