Two Years in Germany

Two years ago today, The Mann and I touched down in a Lufthansa plane at the Frankfurt airport, and my life in Germany began. I can hardly believe I’ve been here for two years. In some ways, it feels like I just got here, yet at the same time I’m amazed at how far I’ve [...]

Earthquake with Chocolate

One of my funniest German language mistakes happened recently at a Christmas market, when I stopped at one of the huts that had mountains of sweets. Without thinking, I mixed up Erdnuss (peanut or “earth nut”) with Erdbeben (earthquake) and asked for an earthquake with chocolate. And, oh, the ground shook when I tasted it.

An Autumn Trek through the Vineyards

A few weeks ago on a sunny, warm, autumn weekend, we decided to hike along a portion of the Rheinsteig trail in Martinsthal, above Eltville. As we were in the Rheingau wine region, the landscape was naturally draped in vineyards. One of which our friend decided to hike through. Straight up the hillside. A steep [...]

Towed

Today at work I heard some commotion in the street below my window, so I got up to look. A parking ticket lady was ticketing cars, and three tow trucks were lined up and towing them. It was entertaining, and I sighed with relief that I’m car-free in Germany. While the last car was being [...]

Little Differences Create the Biggest Homesickness

Balancing Out

I’ve been in Germany for 20 months now, and lately I’ve been pondering that my life in Germany seems to be balancing out, especially now that I am working here. I’m definitely no longer in that honeymoon/vacation phase. Now Germany just feels like a place where I live and work. It’s the normalcy of it [...]

Finally. Gas we can afford.

Wine Weekend

Last weekend The Mann and I had a wine weekend. And we saw that it was good.

Out of Hibernation

This week I can finally declare I’ve emerged from my recent hibernation and the bronchial death. I’m feeling much better, the weather is awesome, and it feels good to have bright, warm, vibrant spring. I still struggle with getting used to my split city life, and at times I desperately miss our adorable, clean, friendly [...]

He’s so skate!

Tonight in this brilliant spring weather, I was wandering the streets of Cologne after work when I came up to the big square to the side of the cathedral. Oodles of dudes on skateboards were flying and flipping and falling, the boards clapping like an out-of-synch audience. One of them in a Dennis Rodman jersey [...]
